PURPOSE
The Purpose of Dual Degree Master’s Program is as follows:
- To provide additional Dual Degree Master’s Program options for RIT and KIT graduate students both in Computer Engineering at RIT and in Information and Computer Engineering at KIT;
- To offer opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of the other culture by experiencing unique characteristics of the program offered by Japanese and US institutions;

Topics of Thesis
At KIT, this master's thesis program provides you with an opportunity to deepen your knowledge in the field of computer Engineering and opens up the opportunity to continue your studies to a state-of-the-art engineer or a PhD level after graduation.
Smart IoT(SV: Minoru Nakazawa)
The aim of this thesis is that students should deepen their understanding of the Internet of Things(IoT) and how to design and engineer IoT-based systems(include Robotics systems). Student will learn about smart technologies on IoT that can be implemented into such areas as transportation, robotics, cities, energy, health, learning, and others. This thesis includes Self-Adaptive System, Cyber Physical System, 5G communication, Autonomous Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (include Machine Learning / Deep Learning), meta-System, and the engineering of Internet of Things Systems.
Human Computer Interaction (SV: Tomohito Yamamoto)
In this thesis, students will learn the analytical methods for understanding human behavior or communication using social or experimental data. Moreover, students will learn how to develop the ICT system such as artificial dialogue systems or communication robots that help/enhance human communication or human society. Prospective students are expected to have experiences in the programming and statistical data analysis, and, ideally, deep learning and natural language processing with open source frameworks.
Embedded Systems (SV: Takashi Kawanami)
In this thesis, students will learn comprehensively embedded systems for IoT such as a microcontroller with sensors and actuators, wireless network systems (Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and LPWA), energy efficient technique, and data analyzing methods. Application areas are sensor network systems for kindergartens / sports / health / tourist guiding / agriculture / etc.. Also development of STEM education programs for kids using embedded systems is one of application. In all of projects, students will be able to design and implement both software and hardware systems.
2 Technical Subjects
IoT: Minoru Nakazawa
In this course, students will understand the Internet of Things(IoT) and how to design and engineer IoT-based systems. This course covers how to setup small computer(and sensor), wireless network(including Zigbee, BLE, LoRa), cloud system(IoT server). Programming skills are required.
Interface Design:Tomohito Yamamoto
In this course, students will learn how to evaluate the interface of such a system, Moreover, students learn how to improve the interface of developed system based on the results of evaluation. Finally, students make a presentation about the entire process of designing interface.
Global Innovation
It is a 9-day intensive course to be held during summer. Based on project-based learning, students solve global and regional problems on a team basis. For the first two days, as a problem finding phase, you will begin with getting lectures and surveys and creating ideas. After that, input will be given in three day technical seminar (microcomputer and sensor network, smartphone application, machine learning). After making three days of prototyping, you will make a presentation to the stakeholders on the final day.
International Internship/ Business
In this internship class, students will learn practical knowledge of engineering and business process through the working experience in Japanese global company. Before the internship, students will prepare to work in Japanese company with some work sheets. The period of internship is typically 2 weeks. In this period, student will be expected to develop some ICT systems in the company. After the internship, student will present about their working experience and also the company gives us the evaluation of students.
Professional Ethics in Engineering
In this course, students learn the values that scientists/engineers should respect as professionals (public safety, health, and welfare etc.) through various cases. And then, they consider examples and its consequence of good decision making. In addition, students acquire the fundamental knowledge of research ethics and consider specific ethical problems in each area, proposing research ethics program of their own laboratory.
REQUIRED CREDITS
The program requires a minimum of 33 semester credit hours in total. Students are expected to complete 18 credits at the home institution and 15 credits at the host institution. Please ask your advisor for more details on the required subjects and the number of credits to receive RIT and KIT’s degrees.
